What is a bridge?

Dental bridges are a non-removable dental restoration used to replace 1-3 missing teeth. Typically, a bridge consists of 3-5 crowns. The shorter it is, the higher its strength and the lower the risk of breakage. In cases of complete tooth loss, a bridge with 10-14 crowns is installed. Depending on the length of the dental prosthesis and the area of the defect, the dental bridge is made from CEREC, zirconia, or porcelain. Modern methods with the use of CEREC enable us to craft your crown or bridge in just one visit!

A dental bridge can be installed in two ways:

Upon Adjacent Teeth

The dental bridge is placed if the supporting teeth are completely healthy and capable of withstanding increased loads. To ensure a reliable and aesthetic fit of the dental bridge, it is important to pre-grind and depulp the supporting teeth. All procedures are performed under anesthesia – you won’t feel any discomfort.

Upon Adjacent Teeth

Upon Dental Implants

The support for the dental bridge is provided by implants. In cases of partial tooth loss, the dental bridge is installed on 2-3 implants, depending on the number of missing teeth. Implants are embedded on the edges of the defect. A dental bridge on implants is recommended when there is a lack of at least three teeth.

Dental Bridge: Before & After

This female patient had a missing front tooth in the smile zone. Dental implant placement was not possible due to significant jawbone atrophy. After a thorough diagnosis, Dr. Mojgan Fajiram prepared the adjacent teeth and placed an aesthetic and durable dental bridge matching the enamel shade of natural teeth. The result in the photo on the right is a healthy smile with perfectly straight, white teeth.

Onyx Opus

I had beautiful & natural veneers done with Dr. Sheila. As a child, I had broken my two front teeth and gotten veneers. As my gums receded, part of my tooth was showing and I was embarrassed to smile. So she removed the old ones, took care of a cavity that was forming!! And made my teeth look amazing. She was wonderful from beginning to end of the process, which was easier than I thought. From the start, she listened carefully to what I wanted and she made it happen- I asked for extended canines for the vampire look and she carved them so beautifully. Being a young female medical professional myself, I know what it takes to achieve the level excellence Dr. Sheila has, and I appreciate her hard work. It’s obvious she also has incredible raw natural talent. I appreciated how she let me know what she was doing and checked in with me regularly throughout the procedure to make sure I’m ok with the results When I asked for small modifications, she
always welcomed me back with a smile and fixed my issues. The process was painless, the veneers are strong and natural looking, and I’m much more confident smiling again!! The atmosphere is great and teeth cleaning is also enjoyable- you get a complimentary moisturizing hand wax too. I love it here it’s worth the trip for me.

When do you need a dental bridge?

We recommend dental bridgework on teeth in the following cases:

  • When one or two teeth are missing.
  • When there are absolute contraindications to dental implantation.
  • In cases of a limited budget, yet a need for an aesthetic and functional smile.

Crafting dental bridges in our in-house laboratory

The advantage of our dental office is our in-house dental laboratory and a dedicated ceramist. This allows us to involve you in the planning, modeling, and crafting of aesthetic dental restorations. Thus, we can guarantee that the bridges produced in our modern laboratory will exceed all your expectations and provide you with the smile of your dreams.

At Sutton Place Cosmetic Dentistry, we achieve outstanding treatment results through advanced technologies. In our practice, we utilize:

iTero Intraoral Scanner

Enables highly precise and deep diagnostics of the hard and soft tissues within the oral cavity. It detects areas of decay, tooth wear, and tooth mobility, as well as assesses the condition of the gums and more. In just a minute, the device generates clear 3D images of teeth in high resolution in real-time. The scanner provides a visual representation of your current dental condition and issues, aiding in accurate treatment planning. The scanning process is comfortable, reducing the number of visits to the dental office and saving your time.

CAD/CAM system Sirona CEREC

An innovative solution that elevates the treatment at our dental office to a new level. A clear advantage of the CEREC system is the ability to perform scanning, designing, and manufacturing of bridges of any complexity within a single visit. The technology takes into account the anatomical features of your teeth, ensuring high aesthetics and a high degree of customization for dental prosthetics. With CEREC, we produce dental crowns, Invisalign, dental bridges, porcelain veneers, and other dental restorations right in the dental chair. With us, you get new teeth in just one session without the need to wear temporary dental bridges.

Diagnosis

To ensure the long-term success of prosthetics, we conduct a thorough diagnosis, which includes:

  1. Medical History Gathering. We explore the history of your illnesses and current health status. We collect information about past surgeries, medications taken, lifestyle, and more. Medical history helps us choose the most effective and safe treatment method.
  2. Examination. We examine the soft and hard structures of the oral cavity and facial musculature. We conduct radiography to gather more information about the structure of the jawbone in the defect area, as well as the condition and position of adjacent teeth. We assess the anatomical features of the jaws.
  3. Digital Scanning. Using an intraoral scanner, we take digital impressions of your teeth. Unlike traditional impression-taking with a molding tray, the intraoral scanner does this much faster and more comfortably. No gag reflex or tedious waiting in the dental chair.
  4. Bite Analysis. We evaluate the alignment of the upper and lower jaws, considering all parameters of the bite to craft a dental bridge for the front teeth that will fit perfectly in the mouth.
  5. Selection of Shape and Tooth Color. Together with you, we choose the shade of the new teeth to match the color of your enamel. Using computer software, we model the new teeth, taking into account the selected shape and color.
  6. Treatment Plan Development. We outline the diagnosis, goals, and treatment methods, along with preventive measures, considering all identified problems and features.

Step-by-step process of fitting a dental bridge

Once the diagnosis is completed, the tooth color is selected, and the treatment plan is formulated. We proceed with the tooth restoration:

1. Oral Cavity Sanitation

Objective: Ensure cleanliness in the prosthetic area, eliminate the development of infections, and reduce the risk of any complications during and after treatment.

We perform a professional cleaning of the oral cavity, removing soft plaque and dental calculus from the tooth surfaces. We treat cavities and address any tissue inflammation in the mouth.

2. Preparation of Supporting Teeth

Objective: Create an ideal seating place for the dental bridge.

We perform enamel shaping and pulp removal on the teeth intended to support the bridge for the missing tooth. We fill the channels and, if necessary, reinforce the supporting teeth with pins or inlays. In our Dental Office, we work with highly aesthetic artificial crowns. Minimal dentin reduction (up to 1.5 mm) is required for their secure installation. This allows for better preservation of the teeth under the dental bridge, prolonging their service life as support for the dental bridges.

3. Fixation of the Bridge for Missing Teeth

Objective: Restore the integrity and aesthetics of the dental arch.

We preliminarily fit the finished bridge ensuring it fits properly, assessing its occlusion and color match to the natural enamel. If you are satisfied with the quality of the dental restoration and feel no discomfort, we temporarily secure it in the mouth. After a few days, we assess the fit quality of the bridge for the missing tooth. If necessary, we perform a rebase and securely fix it onto the teeth.

Preventive care

Preventive measures are crucial to ensure the effective and long-term service of your dental bridge. Here are the key recommendations:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day. Use a soft or medium-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste that is free of abrasive particles.
  • Use an irrigator after each meal. The device effectively cleans interdental spaces and micro gaps between the bridge and the gums. This helps prevent the formation of dental plaque in hard-to-reach areas and supports the longevity of the dental bridge and supporting teeth. If you don’t have an irrigator, use dental floss or at least a mouthwash.
  • Do not overload the tooth bridge. Minimize the consumption of hard foods or chewing with the prosthetic area. This will reduce the risk of breaking or damaging the bridge for the missing tooth.
  • Visit our dental office every six months or more for professional teeth cleaning. Regular check-ups and professional oral hygiene help maintain oral health and detect any issues with teeth and gums at early stages.

Detailed individual recommendations for dental bridge care and nutrition are provided during your visit to our dental office.

FAQ

Dental Bridge is Loose – What Should I Do?

Immediately consult a dentist. The true cause can only be identified in the dental chair. A bridge for missing teeth may become loose due to the deterioration of the fixing compound or the supporting tooth. To reduce the risk of the prosthesis becoming loose and to extend its service life, regularly visit an orthopedist for preventive check-ups.

Can a Dental Bridge be Fixed on a Single Supporting Tooth?

In some cases, yes, if the defect is not in the area of masticatory teeth. The lateral sections regularly experience significant chewing loads. In such cases, it is impossible to guarantee the reliability of fixation and the long service life of the bridge, and the placement of a crown or an implant is preferable.

Is it Possible to Reinstall a Dental Bridge on Supporting Teeth?

In some cases, yes. However, the final decision is made by the doctor after a thorough assessment of the condition of the supporting teeth. In most cases, reinstallation is not possible. The support under the bridge weakens over time and loses the ability to provide reliable fixation of the dental bridge. In such cases, it is recommended to remove the teeth and place a dental bridge on implants.
